Plane and Solid Shapes

After reading The Greedy Triangle and discussing characteristics of 2D (plane) shapes, the students graphed ordered pairs to draw various shapes.

After graphing the shapes, each one was colored a certain color according to its name.

Then, we sorted quadrilaterals and labeled. Students created their own categories to sort when finished.

After learning about 3D (solid) shapes, students identified them with food. Each student was given a bag with various items and sorted them as cylinders, cones, rectangular prisms, spheres, and cubes. The activity was created by Johanna Tackitt and can be found here.

Once sorted and counted, a graph was made. Also, 2 questions were created that could be answered using their graph.

These are the anchor charts for the week.

After all their hard work, students were treated to a Mardi Gras parade put on by Kindergarten.

In addition, we had a Mardi Gras/Valentine's celebration. Students brought in treats for their classmates.

Ms. Gros brought cupcakes that she made. There is not much that she can't do :)
They look and taste AWESOME!!

Finally, at the end of the day our school held our end of the quarter PBIS award. Students that did not receive more than a phone call home attended a magic show. They were amazed and thrilled at the performance!

HAPPY MARDI GRAS!

Patterns

Our focus this week in Math is patterns. We began by reviewing simple AB patterns {triangle, square, triangle, square}. Then, we dove into more complex patterns like ABB, AAB, and so on. Students also identified the next three patterns in the sequence. To practice the skill, students were given two pictures. I found these great, FREE pictures from Dana at 3rd Grade Gridiron.

I know her original purpose was to create arrays, but I found it fit perfectly with today's lesson. Students colored the pictures, created a pattern of their choice, glued to construction paper, and identified the pattern.

Another pattern we discussed today was patterns when finding the sum of even and odd numbers. First, we reviewed even and odd numbers. Then, students were given two die. I wanted them to discover the sum made when adding even and even numbers, even and odd numbers, and odd and odd numbers. The die were rolled and numbers recorded and identified as even or odd {example: 1 - odd, 4 - even}. Once the numbers were added, the students discovered if the sum was even or odd {example: 1 + 4 = 5; therefore, odd + even = odd}.

Another great, FREE resource I found to go with this week's lesson are Pumpkin Pattern Task Cards from Rachael at The Classroom Game Nook.

On to Monday Made it with Tara at 4th Grade Frolics!

I have been playing around with layouts, graphics, borders, etc. trying to familiarize myself with this process. I took the plunge and made iPods with classroom jobs. You can grab your copy of it at my TpT store for free. I only ask that you leave feedback :)

Then I thought to myself, I should spice up some of my board games that the kiddos use on the Promethean board. I decided to start with one theme and create as many as I can. My first theme is robots.

This first board game is a template. All the features have been activated {action objects such as page reset, jumping back to another page}. The only thing you have to do is type the questions and answers. All the directions are on in the note section of the flipchart. Click on either picture to download from my TpT store.

For those that don't want to create questions, I have also started creating skill-specific game boards. This one is to review customary measurement. Every week I create a new game focused on the skill being taught. One of my centers is called Math with IWB in which the students, in their group, compete to get the correct answers and reach the finish line first. Get here.
